Gardening

As the students develop an awareness of their cultural and social roles in the world, Village Montessori also has a full Montessori gardening curriculum integrated into the outdoor environment. Students spontaneously choose activities such as raking leaves for the compost bin, using the wheelbarrow to replace rocks around stepping stones, and cleaning mud from the slides. Through these and other activities, the children learn how to be responsible consumers and caretakers of the environment.

Whoever touches the life of the child touches the most sensitive point of a whole which has roots in the most distant past and climbs toward the infinite future.

Young children can help weed, rake, dig, and plant.  They love learning new words, the bigger the better, so teach them the real scientific names of plants if you know them.  Explain to them how plants grow, and what a cotyledon is.  It is through these kinds of experiences that they will learn to revere life -- all life, from the tiniest of insects to the rain forest and their fellow man!
